Jersey Apprenticeship Scheme

Offer an apprenticeship

The Jersey Apprenticeship Scheme is currently under review.

We are accepting new apprentices onto the current Scheme's terms and conditions up to 30 June 2012 to allow transition arrangements to the revised Scheme to be implemented after that date.

A consultation process will shortly be undertaken on the requirements of both employers and apprentices.  If you would like to be part of this consultation process, please contact us.

The information below applies to the current Scheme, which is under review.

About the Jersey Apprenticeship Scheme
We offer grants to employers to support on and off -the-job training.

We support apprenticeships in the following trades:

  • carpentry or joinery
  • electrical engineering
  • food preparation
  • hairdressing
  • mechanical engineering, welding and fabrication
  • motor vehicle engineering
  • painting and decorating
  • plumbing and heating
  • trowel trades

Your apprentice will be required to fill out a logbook during their apprenticeship.  You will need to sign this off weekly and provide monthly and quarterly reviews of their progress.  We will write to you to ask to see the logbook 4 times a year.  Receipt of a completed logbook will be a condition of the grant payment.

Accreditation for first time applicants
If you have not had an apprentice on the Jersey Apprenticeship Scheme before you need to become accredited. This is to ensure that you have the relevant experience, insurance and safety procedures to provide a positive experience for the apprentice to train in.

There are two parts to the process:

  • complete the trade specific 'accreditation' form. (Note the checklist on page 3, which outlines the documentation required alongside this)
  • sign and agree the Jersey Apprenticeship Scheme Agreement. (Note schedule 1 which outlines the minimum employment terms you must offer to be eligible for the scheme)

Please get in touch if you would like to meet with us to ask any questions about this process. As soon as you have completed these forms, you are eligible to register apprentices on the scheme.

Registering your apprentice
When your business is accredited you can register an apprentice. To be eligible, the apprentice must fulfil two criterion:

  • meet 5 year residency requirements
  • meet the minimum qualification requirements or have at least one year’s relevant work experience. Qualification requirements differ for each trade. To see the qualification framework for your trade, please refer to the qualification requirements.

N.B. Individuals who have completed an apprenticeship in one craft area will not be eligible for financial support to undertake a further apprenticeship in another trade.
